MARIJUANA: SHOULD IT BE LEGALIZED NATIONALLY?

January 15, 2014 by Leslie Wimes Leave a Comment

Marijuana!

Marijuana!

“I’m in love with Mary Jane. She’s my main thang. Mary makes me feel alright. She makes my heart sang”

Who doesn’t remember that hit song from the late Rick James? Was he talking about marijuana? Of course he was! Rick, along with a lot of Americans, liked to smoke a joint every now and then. For the majority of Americans, they are committing a crime. For those that live in Washington State and Colorado, recreational marijuana is legal, and business appears to be booming!
In Colorado, sales topped a million dollars in the first week for one business. I’m sure others will follow. Hell I’ve thought about opening a Hookah-type Marijuana Bar there. Imagine selling the marijuana and then satisfying the “munchies” that go with smoking a joint!

I don’t personally smoke weed, however I know some people who do. Should it be legal? I’m still on the fence about that. I know no one has ever overdosed on marijuana. I know that cigarettes have caused more deaths. We won’t even mention alcohol. I guess being old school makes it difficult for me to accept that something that has been illegal all my life could possibly be legal everywhere.

The profits from the sale of illegal marijuana are through the roof. Imagine if it were legal everywhere! Talk about revenue for the government! Other laws would have to change, though. For instance banks currently can’t accept funds from businesses that deal in marijuana, legal or illegal. That is federally mandated, so even though states like Colorado and Washington have legalized the drug, the banks still fall under federal law.

The next few years should prove to be very interesting in the world of ganja!
Should it be legalized nationally? We know no one is going to stop selling it or smoking it if they don’t want to! Besides, the court system and jails benefit from keeping it illegal. Maybe that is what is holding the legalization up. There are a lot of people in jail and paying court fines for possession of marijuana! Things that make you go “hmmmm”!!
